Stop Arm Awareness at Traffic Safety Day

Northstar Bus Lines and American Student Transportation Put Student Safety Front and Center

At Northstar Bus Lines and American Student Transportation, student safety is not just part of the job. It is the foundation of everything we do. That is why we were proud to take part in Traffic Safety Day and use the opportunity to highlight one of the most important school transportation safety messages in our community:

Stop Means Stop

Every day, students rely on school buses to get to and from school safely. But the most dangerous moments are often not while students are riding the bus. They happen outside the bus, especially during loading and unloading. That is why stop arm awareness matters so much.

When a school bus has its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, drivers must stop. These signals are in place to protect children who may be crossing the street, stepping onto the bus, or getting off and walking home. In those moments, a few seconds of patience from drivers can make a life-saving difference.

Why Stop Arm Safety Matters

Many drivers do not realize how quickly a dangerous situation can happen around a stopped school bus. Children can be hard to see, especially during busy morning traffic, poor weather, or after-school rush hour. They may move unexpectedly, and drivers who are distracted or in a hurry may not react in time.

Traffic Safety Day gave us the chance to remind families, students, and motorists that school bus safety is a shared responsibility. Professional drivers are trained to follow strict safety procedures, but protecting children at the bus stop also depends on the awareness of everyone on the road.

Minnesota Stop Arm Law

In Minnesota, drivers must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus when the bus is displaying flashing red lights and the stop arm is extended.

Traffic in both directions must stop, unless the road is separated by a physical median.

Violating stop arm laws can lead to citations, fines, and penalties, but more importantly, illegal passing puts children at serious risk.

A Strong Message for the Community

At Traffic Safety Day, Northstar Bus Lines and American Student Transportation were proud to help spread a simple but powerful message:

A child’s safety is worth the wait.

Events like this are important because they help turn awareness into action. When community members understand the meaning of a bus stop arm and the law behind it, they are more likely to make safe decisions on the road.

Our goal is not just to remind people of the rules. It is to build a stronger culture of safety around every school bus stop in the communities we serve.

How Drivers Can Help

Drivers can help protect students by remembering a few key safety steps:

  • Watch for school buses, especially in neighborhoods and school zones

  • Stop immediately when red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out

  • Stay alert and avoid distractions like phones

  • Watch carefully for children on both sides of the road

  • Give yourself extra time and be patient

Moving Safety Forward Together

Northstar Bus Lines and American Student Transportation are honored to support events like Traffic Safety Day because they help keep safety visible, practical, and personal.

Every student deserves a safe journey. Every driver has a role in making that happen.

When you see the stop arm out, remember:
